On March 30, 2018, "Yizhuang News" published a half-page feature interview with Ms. Liu Changru, Chairman of Haibu Pharmaceutical. The full text is excerpted as follows:
Liu Changru has come a long way, relying on dedication, perseverance, and an unwavering original intention. With a global perspective, she has steadfastly promoted the research and development of chemical drugs, continuously achieving new results and bringing Beijing Haibu Pharmaceutical Technology Co., Ltd. to a new stage of development. The company owns two wholly-owned subsidiaries: Beijing Haimeitong and Haimeiyuan, and holds shares in Shandong Kongfu Pharmaceutical. It invests in research and development in multiple fields such as anti-tumor drugs, depression, cardiovascular diseases, digestive system medications, and respiratory system medications. It has applied for more than ten invention patents and obtained over ten new drug certificates and production licenses, as well as over forty clinical trial approvals. The company has been recognized as a "National High-tech Enterprise" and "Beijing Science and Technology Research Development Institution." In early 2016, the company was listed on the New Third Board and received capital injections from Xinjiang Wuwu Oasis Phase I Equity Investment Partnership in 2016 and the well-known investment institution Shenzhen Tongchuang Weiye in 2017.
Ignorant yet fearless with passionate youth.
Liu Changru always has a bright smile; her approachability makes her feel like the big sister next door to her employees. Her friendly demeanor may be related to her entrepreneurial experiences.
"After the Spring Festival in 2006, I started looking for an office space. I chose Room 309 in Building B of Innovation Mansion in the Development Zone; that’s now our third-floor synthesis laboratory," Liu Changru recalled. Due to limited funds, she negotiated several times with the property management until she managed to reduce the rent by five cents per square meter per day.
"I thought it was great that we saved on renovation costs." The initial office space for Haibu was over 300 square meters; calculating the rent saved us more than 5,000 yuan a year. Plus, since the previous company had just moved out, we saved on extensive renovations with its blue entrance hall, spacious lobby, and several partitioned rooms.
In March of that year, the company officially opened its doors. Liu Changru and about ten 'ignorant yet fearless' young people held discussions filled with hope for the future—HOPE = Haibu—talking about patents, new projects, experimental plans, and approval strategies.
Not long after opening, the company faced a crisis due to national drug regulatory reforms addressing chaotic drug registration approvals. Changes in regulations along with major pharmaceutical companies' confusion about new drug R&D prospects left little hope for new contracts by the second half of 2007 beyond a few small projects received at startup.
Liu Changru realized that if they didn't find alternative paths forward soon enough, the company might 'die.'
"I really couldn't sleep at night because of anxiety." At that time Liu Changru was determined not to give up. Through her efforts she learned that a pharmaceutical factory had an active ingredient product that needed process improvements before it could resume production after years of suspension. They proposed that if Haibu could provide them with production processes to help them complete GMP certification they could supply intermediates as vendors.
Liu Changru recognized this as an opportunity for Haibu; if they leveraged their technical advantages to tackle this active ingredient's production process they could bring hope to Haibu's future. She immediately promised: Haibu would invest its own funds for R&D at its own risk.
Subsequently under Liu Changru's leadership they organized R&D personnel who meticulously designed experiments; through hard work from technical staff they overcame numerous technical challenges. After more than ten months they finally completed a brand-new production process which successfully passed trial production at their factory.
During China's National Day holiday in October 2008 Liu Changru boarded an international flight to Frankfurt carrying two hundred euros given by a close friend as pocket money; she went alone to attend Europe's CPHI exhibition. "I just wanted to see how others run their companies? What does the market need? What can we provide? Where is Haibu's future path?" Just before takeoff she received a call from her company: The goods had already been delivered to the client's warehouse.
Haibu had 'survived.'
'With ambition build a new platform for Haibu.'
"After this 'big test,' Liu Changru firmly believes that China's pharmaceutical industry remains a sunrise industry full of opportunities; drug R&D is core driving force behind this industry's development—if one persists diligently working within this field there will surely be room for survival and opportunities for growth."
'In subsequent two or three years national drug R&D regulatory policies gradually clarified revitalizing entire industry again.' During this phase Haibu continuously recruited talent expanded laboratories acquired new instruments stocked up on new products while also investing shares into Kongfu Pharmaceutical participating throughout planning design completion acceptance processes until October of2012 when their new factory obtained its drug manufacturing license while several newly developed products by Haibu were also successively submitted to national drug review center.'
In addition to accepting client commissioned developments Liu Changru also utilized surplus self-owned funds independently initiated R&D projects reserving around ten category three new drugs.
Although some achievements were made Liu Changru still maintained an 'as if walking on thin ice' mindset remaining alert towards potential crises during company's growth process engaging exchanges with management experts from related enterprises along with successful entrepreneurs learning from them reviewing past governance issues within Haibu understanding exemplary companies' successful experiences lessons designing comprehensive reform plans pathways deciding lead haibuto enter capital markets March2016 haibuwas approved smoothly listedonnewthirdboard.

Firm confidence determinedto developmorenewdrugs.
To outsiders chemical drugs may not seem as promising as biological ones but in LiuChangrusviewchemicaldrugsstillhaveanother20-30yearsdevelopmentspace.
Liu Changru said, "The country is currently vigorously promoting the research and development of generic drugs, and the prospects are promising. I am very confident. Haibu Pharmaceutical will continue to focus on the fields of chemical drugs and generic drugs, and relevant patents are in the application process."
Regarding the future, Liu Changru hopes to launch some products into the market by 2020. Achieving these goals requires the team to have acceptance and learning abilities, as well as a mindset that adapts to change. Haibu must maintain 80% of its personnel engaged in research and development work to build up momentum for the company's growth; at a technical level, Haibu will always focus on R&D and technology, introducing applications of technologies including artificial intelligence and computer-aided design.
With continuous technological advancements, information technology and methods in drug research and development are becoming increasingly mature. Recently, Haibu Pharmaceutical has established a new information center server room and renovated its network and data center infrastructure, laying a solid foundation for information applications in the next 5-10 years. The company has widely collected, discovered, and tested software and database systems in experimental design, computer-aided analysis, and formulation R&D, gradually applying them in practical work to actively adapt to the changes brought by technological progress in the industry with the aim of improving work efficiency in drug R&D.
For Liu Changru, after setting a general direction for the company's long-term development, it is essential to integrate new technologies, methods, and technical applications while maintaining an innovative spirit to promote substantial growth for the company.
Liu Changru feels that she is a particularly idealistic person; she hopes that Haibu can develop more new drugs to benefit humanity. "The path we must take should be steady but always with a heart for self-transcendence," Liu Changru said.
